Bargains and Budgeting

So I realized yesterday that I’m becoming quite the “bargain snob” – if I can’t get something on sale/as a good deal, I get annoyed at having to buy it. :) My mom will probably laugh at this post, but I’ve gotten to the point when I’m buying groceries where I get grumpy if I can’t get it in Aldi. If you’ve never been in an Aldi foods and you have one near you, then you really ought to check it out. When you’re operating on what my wonderful husband calls “an anemic budget”, you look for any way you can to stretch a dollar. We’ve found that most of the off-brands or no-name brands they carry are fine; a few things we even prefer over the brands we can get in, say, Wal-Mart or Target. I had become so used to just assuming Wal-Mart always had the cheapest prices that I was pleasantly surprised at how much cheaper it was to buy our stuff in Aldi. What would normally cost me around $100 in Wal-Mart will only cost me about $65 in Aldi.

Of course, every now and then you find one of their “special deals” that throws you for a loop. I picked up one of these (in Cars) for the boys’ room. Even along with this extra purchase in with my weekly groceries, I spent $110 – you have to love it!!

On another budget-friendly idea (yes, this is a totally random post :P ) I ran across is a great cheap idea for summer (or just for bathtime). I found these neat sponge balls on MakeAndTakes.com. You use plain old colored sponges that you can get cheaply (even at the dollar store) and either zip ties or you could use rubber bands. The kids think they’re great, and they’d make great party favors if you have a kiddo with a summer birthday party. :)
